The Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics at the College of Fishery Science, Nagpur was established in 2006 and renamed in 2017-18 following the implementation of the Fifth Dean’s Committee syllabus. The department actively conducts extension activities like training programs, field demonstrations, workshops, and seminars across the Vidarbha region. It offers 08 undergraduate courses in the first six semesters and 08 credits under the Student READY Programme in the final year of the B.F.Sc. degree. Research efforts focus on standardizing fish culture practices in village tanks and small reservoirs. The department successfully implemented the project on fish stock enhancement in small reservoirs, achieving a fourfold increase in productivity. Major focus areas include freshwater fish culture technologies like seed production of Indian Major Carps using FRP hatcheries, fingerling rearing, fish culture in polythene-lined ponds, and farming of tilapia and Pangasius spp. The faculty has completed several projects funded by DST, NFDB, RGSTC, and STRC, promoting technologies such as fish seed rearing, cage culture, IMC seed production, diversified fish farming, and live fish marketing.
