Established in 2006 under the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), the Aquatic Environment Management Department (AEMD) at the College of Fishery Science (CFS), Nagpur, was founded to tackle pressing challenges such as aquatic ecosystem degradation, pollution, and sustainable fisheries management in Central India. Building on India’s post-independence emphasis on fisheries education, the department became a regional leader in merging environmental science with aquaculture, prioritizing the conservation of Maharashtra’s vital water bodies like the Godavari River and Gosikhurd Reservoir, while aligning with national climate resilience and resource management goals.
